Saints split pair at Southern Softball Showdown

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Flagler College split the first two games of the Southern Softball Showdown on Saturday at the South Commons Softball Complex, The Saints defeated Lee University 4-1 before falling to Shorter University 14-7.

Flagler moves its record to 1-3 overall.
 
Ally Mercano (1-1) tossed seven innings and allowed one run on five hits for Flagler. She walked four batters and struck out eight in her win against Lee.
 
Flagler gave Mercano four runs of support and plated two runs in the first. Tracy Caccavale knocked in both runs on a single to right, scoring Mackenzie Conley and Maddy Murphy on the play.
 
Lee cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth, but Flagler answered with two in the sixth to extend its lead to 4-1. Alli-Ann Bigale scored on a fielding error and Maria Kappos drew a walk which drove in Tatum Morgan.
 
Leigh Beatenbough (0-1) suffered the loss for Lee. She allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings of work.
 
In the second game of the night, Flagler owned a 5-1 lead against Shorter after two innings. Natalie Murphy homered to left in the second and Whitney Woodard tripled in Garland Evans in the four-run frame.
 
Shorter answered with six runs in the top of the third on three hits and three Flagler errors, The Saints committed five errors during the contest. Ericka Bynum collected a game-high three hits and had four runs batted in for the Lady Hawks.

Mackenzie Conley smacked a two-run homer to left in the seventh to cut the lead to 14-7, but that is as close as Flagler would get.
 
Katelynn Smith (0-2) suffered the loss for Flagler allowing nine runs on five hits.
 
Flagler will face Union University of Jackson, Tennessee at 9 a.m., and the University of West Alabama at 11:30 a.m. to wrap up the Southern Softball Showdown tomorrow.
