ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Flagler College scored three unearned runs to defeat Georgia College 4-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball mutual opener Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved its overall record to 10-3. Georgia College had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-3.
With the scored tied at 2-all in the bottom of the seventh, Brady Walsh was brought in for relief after
Bryce Evans drew a four-pitch walk.
Igor Baez hit a slow grounder to second base, enough that Evans was able to advance.
Jake Hathaway hit a dribbler off the end of his bat in front of the mound, but Walsh's throw to first was too high and Hathaway was safe and Evans took third. On a 1-1 pitch to
Cole Ondrejka, the next batter, the ball dribbled away from catcher Brandon Purcell. Hathaway took off for second base and Purcell's throw one-hopped second baseman Garrett Green. Green could not handle the ball, and in the chaos, Evans took off for home and beat the throw to the plate and gave the Saints a 3-2 lead. Two batters later,
Ethan Crout belted a shot to the right-center gap for a triple and Hathaway crossed home plate with the insurance run.
Nick Martinez pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Saints and
Luke Cooksey came on in the ninth to shut the door allowing only one hit and he fanned the last batter to earn his third save.
Michael Maiocco (4-0) tossed seven innings, scattered five hits and allowed two runs. He walked two and struck out eight.
Charlie Hecht (2-2) tossed six-plus innings, scattered five hits and allowed one earned run. He walked three and struck out five.
Dylan Jones led Flagler with a pair of hits, including a double and he scored a run.
Ja'Kobi Dasher collected a pair of singles.
Nate Schmal had two singles for the Bobcats.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow (Feb. 25) at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
