FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University closed the game on a 16-2 run to rally past Flagler College 72-59 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Smith University Center.
Francis Marion snapped its three-game losing streak and improved to 9-15 overall and 5-11 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its fourth game in a row and dropped to 9-14 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
Flagler took a 57-56 lead with 4:42 left to go in the game thanks to a
Chris Williams dunk. However, the Saints would miss their last seven shots from the field, four of which came from behind the 3-point arc. Francis Marion capitalized on the situation making 5-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Judah Alexander made the first of two free throws with 3:26 left to tie the game and then John Council made a layup in transition with 3:07 left to give the Patriots the lead for good, 59-57.
Brandon Parker scored a team-high 18 points for Francis Marion. Detrek Browning added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists while Alexander recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Council came off the bench to tally 10 points.
The Patriots shot 62.1 percent (18-29) from the field in the second half which helped erase a 28-26 lead by Flagler at the half.
Jeffercy Jean tied his career-high with 21 points, which led all scorers. He made 8-of-11 from the field. Williams grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Flagler will play its final road game of the season on Wednesday (Feb. 15) at the University of South Carolina Aiken at 7:30 p.m.
