ST. AUGUSTINE – The University of North Georgia used a 21-2 run midway through the second half to defeat Flagler College 74-64 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
North Georgia snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 overall and they evened their Peach Belt record to 1-1. Flagler lost its second consecutive game and fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Today's game was the first for the Saints in two weeks.
After
Jeffercy Jean's six-foot jumper gave Flagler a 46-39 lead with 14:20 remaining in the game, it was all North Georgia. Bennett Fuzak sank a 3-pointer to start the run, and after a McCall layup, the Nighthawks went on to score the next 18 points in a row. North Georgia shot 70 percent (7-10) in the run while the Saints managed only 11.1 percent (1-9).
Cortlin Davis scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the first half to lead the Saints. He added nine rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals to his line.
Damerit Brown added 15 points while
Vaughn McCall tallied 10 points and had five assists.
Chris Williams grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Flagler was limited to 39.7 percent (25-63) shooting from the field and 18.2 percent (2-11) from 3-point range. The Saints out-scored the Nighthawks 44-24 in the paint.
Ebo Smith led North Georgia with 21 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field. Fuzak added 15 points and six rebounds while Colin Cotter tacked on 11 points. Shaquan Cantrell chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds. Ephraim Tshimanga tallied seven assists.
Despite being out-rebounded 45-44, North Georgia grabbed 14 points and those were cashed in for 21 points. The Nighthawks drained 11 treys with Fuzak leading the way with four.
Flagler returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 19) against Young Harris College. The game will tip about 3 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
