Ben Bobbitt and
Vaughn McCall each scored 18 points, but Flagler College could not overcome a cold first half in a 76-62 loss to the University of Montevallo in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Montevallo improved to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
The Falcons used a 12-4 spurt early in the game to pull away from the Saints. Montevallo led by as many as 14 in the first half before heading to the locker room with a 38-26 lead. Montevallo led the entire game.
Flagler struggled in the first half making 32.1% (9-28) from the field while Montevallo made 53.6% (15-28). The Falcons outscored the Saints 44-22 in the pain for the game.
The Saints cut into the deficit in the second half, trailing by four (51-47) after a McCall six-foot jumper with 13:17 left to go. Flagler could not get any closer.
Tazz Marbury scored a game-high 19 points on 8 of 9 shooting for Montevallo. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Kevin Kelly added 16 points while Jamaar Taylor chipped in with 11. Talan Whitaker contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons.
Jeffercy Jean added 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Saints.
Flagler's 23 rebounds was a season low.
Flagler will look to re-group and head back out on the road to face Clayton State University on Monday (Jan. 16) at 3:30 p.m. at Morrow, Georgia. This will be the last PBC West Division team the Saints will play in the regular season.
