Saints split two matches on Saturday

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College volleyball team split two matches in the Flagler Saints Classic Saturday at Flagler Gym. The Saints opened with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-21) sweep of Limestone College before falling in a heart-breaker to Wingate University 3-2 (15-25, 25-11, 25-21, 23-25, 9-15) to wrap up the day.

Flagler went 2-1 in the tournament and ends with a 4-2 overall record. Wingate posted a 4-0 record and leaves with an 8-0 overall record. Limestone lost all three of its matches and departed with a 4-5 record. Armstrong State University went 3-1 while Erskine College and King University both went 0-2.

In the opener against Limestone, Flagler hit an efficient .287 as a team with 36 kills and 11 errors on 87 swings. The defense held Limestone to a -.021 hitting percentage. Flagler recorded 10 total team blocks.

Megan Hooks recorded a match-high 13 kills and hit .385. She added four block assists to her line. Sara Davis added seven kills and eight total blocks. Tara Savisky tallied 34 assists and Kayla Norelli collected 12 digs.

Darla Svoboda led Limestone with seven kills and nine digs. Mia Bergan tallied 12 assists.

In the nightcap, it was the showdown many expected. The two teams have met twice in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region title match and the Saints won both of those (2009 and 2011). But the last time these two tangled in the regular season was back in 2012 at the USC Aiken Invitational.

The Bulldogs rolled in the first set, but the Saints roared back to take the second set in convincing fashion, 25-11. Flagler hit .500 in that set. Flagler took the third set 25-21 and then held a 21-17 in the fourth set.

Wingate was able to chip away at the deficit and tied the set at 22-all on a kill by Abby Saehler. She then teamed up with Tyler Smith on a double-block to give Wingate a 23-22 lead. An attack error and another kill by Saehler gave the Bulldogs a 25-23 win to send the match to the deciding fifth set.

The Bulldogs opened with a 12-4 run and held off the Saints in the end 15-9.

Saehler finished with a match-high 18 kills and completed the double-double with 14 digs. Oakley Attaway added 11 kills, 13 digs and four service aces. Rachel Alles tallied 43 assists and 11 digs.

Hooks led the Saints with 15 kills and added four total blocks. Davis added 11 kills and had a season-high nine total blocks. Savisky recorded her third double-double of the season with 45 assists and 16 digs. Shea Hamilton collected a season-high 19 digs while Norelli added 18.

Flagler will venture out on the road for the first time this season when it visits Rollins College on Wednesday (Sept. 14) at 7 p.m.
