No. 6 Lander rallies past Flagler, 13-3

FLORENCE, S.C. – No. 6 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 25) Lander University scored all 13 of its runs in the seventh inning to defeat Flagler College 13-3 in a Peach Belt Conference tournament game Wednesday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium. The game was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Lander improved to 37-12 overall and 1-0 in pool play. Flagler fell to 29-19 overall and is 0-1 in pool play.

The Saints broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when James Jean's grounder to shortstop was misplayed by Matt White which allowed Bryce Evans, who led off the inning with a double, to score.

Flagler added to its lead with single runs in the fifth and the sixth with help of RBI singles by Jean and Igor Baez, respectively.

Mike O'Reilly cruised along tossing six scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, walked two, and fanned nine batters before giving way to the bull pen.

The Saints bull pen threw just two-thirds of an inning, allowed 10 hits, all 13 runs, walked three and hit a batter.

Kyle Schackne (3-1) came on to start the inning sporting the league's lowest earned run average (2.02). He walked the first hitter, allowed a single and then hit the next batter to load the bases. Alex Conaway hit a single through the right side of the infield to get the Bearcats on the board. Michael Hanke relieved Schackne and struck out the first batter he faced. But Will Jones drew a bases loaded walk and then White singled through the left side of the infield to plate two more runs and Lander grabbed the lead and never looked back.

In all, Lander sent 15 batters to the plate in the seventh inning and scored 13 runs on 10 hits against five different Flagler pitchers.

Jones (8-2) went the distance and scattered 11 hits and allowed three runs while walking two and striking out eight batters. He helped out his own cause by hitting a game-ending three-run home run off of Saints reliever Jeremy Graf.

Conaway collected two singles, both coming in the seventh inning. He drove in two runs and scored twice. Mason Dodd went 2-for-4 with a run scored while John Mangum singled twice and scored two runs.

Schackne faced four batters in the seventh and allowed two hits, a walk and hit a batter. All four runners scored.

Baez hit three singles and drove in a run while Jabe Molinaro also collected three singles, but he scored a run.

Flagler has tomorrow off and will return to action on Friday (May 13) against No. 24 University of South Carolina Aiken at 7 p.m. at Sparrow Stadium.
