Oberg’s grand slam rallies Saints past Pirates

ST. AUGUSTINE – Nick Oberg belted a grand slam over the left field wall in the sixth inning to help rally Flagler College past Armstrong State University 8-5 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 20-14 overall and 8-11 in the Peach Belt. Armstrong State fell to 15-20 overall and 6-16 in conference play.

The Saints trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the sixth. Cole Ondrejka and Igor Baez hit back-to-back single with one out to get the rally started. James Jean drew a walk which spelled the end of Armstrong reliever Sid Royal (1-3) who came in to pitch an inning earlier. Caleb Woods came in to strikeout the first batter he saw, and then Oberg blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to erase the deficit. That was Oberg's second grand slam of the year and the fourth of the season for the Saints.

That would be all Flagler reliever Kyle Schackne (2-0) would need to secure the win. He tossed four scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and he fanned five. Schackne came in for Flagler ace Mike O'Reilly who tossed the first five innings and scattered eight hits and allowed five runs with six strikeouts.

Ondrejka finished with two singles and he scored two runs while Baez collected two singles, scored two runs and knocked another two runs in.

Royal pitched one inning for the Pirates and surrendered just two hits. He was responsible for three of the runs that scored on the grand slam. Nick Andress started and pitched 4.1 innings, allowed five hits and four runs, but walked seven batters.

Ryan Patterson led Armstrong's 11-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and he scored two runs. J.T. Phillips went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Jerad Curry went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs batted in and he scored two runs. Cody Sherlin went 2-for-5 with a home run.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (April 9) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
