Saints come up short against Jaguars

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Augusta University's Will Thompson tossed a complete game five-hitter in a 4-2 victory over Flagler College to complete the Peach Belt Conference series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Augusta improved to 23-11 overall and 14-5 in the Peach Belt. The Jaguars have won the last six games in a row at Drysdale Field. Flagler fell to 18-14 overall and 7-11 in conference play.

Thompson (4-2) allowed two runs, walked four and struck out nine. He tossed 138 pitches and retired 12 of the last 13 batters.

Nick Rau's solo home run in the fourth inning, against a 15 mile per hour cross-wind that just cleared the left field wall proved to be the game-winning hit as it gave the Jaguars a 3-1 lead.

Hunter Boose added an RBI double in the fifth inning for insurance.

In the sixth, Kolin McMillen led off the inning by drawing a walk and moved to third on an Igor Baez single to right-center. Augusta catcher Cole Thompson could not find a ball in the dirt that was at his feet which allowed Baez to move to second base on a wild pitch. Cole Ondrejka grounded out to second to plate McMillen, but the Saints could not get any closer.

Clint Hardy finished with a pair of singles and he scored two runs for Augusta. Boose went 2-for-4 with the double and a run batted in. Rau went 2-for-3 with the home run.

Dustin Dye (4-4) took the loss for Flagler. He tossed 5.1 innings, allowed seven hits and three earned runs. Dye walked a batter and fanned three. Luke Cooksey closed the game, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and struck out two batters.

Nick Oberg went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run.

Up next for the Saints is a meeting with No. 8 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Florida Southern College on Wednesday (April 6) at 6 p.m.
