SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 7 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Saint Leo University swept a non-conference doubleheader from Flagler College, 2-0 and 10-1, Friday evening at the University Softball Stadium.
Saint Leo increased its winning streak to 17 games and improved to 31-1. Flagler fell to 20-23.
In the opener, Stephanie Adams (14-1) tossed a three-hit shutout for the Lions. She walked two batters and struck out seven. Adams retired the first 10-of-11 batters she faced.
She got all of the offense she needed in the fourth inning. Samantha Ohmie belted a two-run home run to left field to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Ohmie also had a double in the game.
Haleigh Corbally (9-8) went the distance and allowed five hits and two runs.
Whitney Woodard,
Hannah Hudson and
Mallory Allen all had a single for the Saints.
In the second game, the Saints got on the board first.
Malloree Escue hit a one-out single in the first inning and then stole second. Two batters later,
Hannah Hudson hit a single up the middle which scored Escue.
But for the rest of the game it was all Lions. In the home half of the first, Saint Leo sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs on five hits. Brooke Samios-Uy and Ciera Schumaker hit back-to-back RBI singles and then two more runs came in, one on a passed ball and another on a wild pitch.
The Lions added another run in the second and five more in the fourth.
Flagler was retired in order in the top of the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.
Alana Tabel (11-0) tossed all five innings, allowed four hits and one run. She fanned four.
Samios-Uy went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in and she scored two runs. Rachel Heath collected two singles and scored three runs.
Callie Reed (7-10) tossed two innings and surrendered six hits and three earned runs.
Tinsley Smith pitched the final two innings.
Escue, Hudson,
Maddy Murphy and
Tori Volz hit singles for the Saints. Woodard stole two bases in the third inning to increase her season total to 26. She is seven shy of tying the school's single-season record.
Flagler has its last road trip of the season on April 8 at the University of North Carolina Pembroke at noon.
