MELBOURNE, Fla. – John Sternagel's two-run home run in the fourth inning proved to give Florida Tech enough insurance to down Flagler College 4-2 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
Florida Tech improved to 23-15 overall while Flagler fell to 22-15.
Kevin Capella led off the fourth with a single to left and was bunted over to second base. Erik Molina popped up a bunt to Flagler pitcher
Jordan Doyle (0-2) for the second out of the inning. That's when Sternagel stepped to the plate with the Panthers leading 2-1. He belted a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to give Florida Tech a 4-1 lead.
The Saints scored a run in the ninth as
Nick Oberg's double to left-center scored
Bryce Evans all the way from first base.
Flagler took an early 1-0 lead when
Kolin McMillen hit a one-out triple to right field and then scored on
Cole Ondrejka's ground out in the top of the first.
Florida Tech tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by David Wilson.
The Panthers increased their lead to 2-1 in the third with the help of a squeeze bunt.
Andy Marzheuser (3-1) tossed six innings, scattered three hits, allowed one run, walked a batter and fanned seven to earn the win. Drew Beyer was credited with his fourth save of the season after tossing one inning, allowing two hits and a run.
Sternagel went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs batted in. James Gronberg collected two singles and drove in a run.
Doyle tossed four innings for the Saints and took the loss. He surrendered six hits and four runs with two walks and three strikeouts. McMillen went 2-for-2 with the triple and a run scored. Evans singled twice, stole a base and scored a run.
Flagler plays its final road Peach Belt Conference series of the weekend starting Friday (April 15) at Georgia Southwestern State University at 5 p.m.
