AUGUSTA, Ga. – Flagler College and Augusta University split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Jaguar Field. Flagler won the opener 2-0, but the Jaguars took game two, 2-1.
Flagler is now 19-18 overall and 4-10 in the Peach Belt. Augusta is 12-26 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
Haleigh Corbally (8-6) fanned a career-high 15 batters and tossed a complete game four-hit shutout in the opener for the Saints. She retired 11 batters in a row and allowed only two base runners to reach scoring position.
Flagler did all of its damage in the third inning.
Garland Evans singled to shortstop and then stole second base.
Whitney Woodard drew a walk and
Tori Volz followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Haley Birkle (4-8) threw a wild pitch to advance all of the runners, including Evans who scored the game's first run.
Malloree Escue flew out to right field to plate Woodard and the Saints increased their lead to 2-0.
From there, Augusta's only threat was in the seventh inning when Carolyn Edwards led off the inning with a double, but Corbally retired the next three batters to strand her at second.
Evans had a couple of singles for the Saints and she stole a base.
Maddy Murphy had a double.
Birkle scattered five hits, allowed two runs, walked four and fanned two to pick up the loss for the Jaguars. Edwards had half of Augusta's hits, two, including her double.
In game two, Augusta trailed Flagler 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh. They had only mustered one hit off
Callie Reed (7-7) the previous six innings.
Kristen Bagley led off the inning with a walk and Edwards followed with a double to right-center. Alex Head came on to run for Edwards at second base and Reed was replaced in the circle by Corbally, the winner in game one. Lindsey Stokes greeted Crobally with a single back up the middle scoring both runs to end the game.
Paige Deschaine (6-9) went the distance for Augusta and allowed four hits and an unearned run. She struck out six and walked three.
Bagley had the other hit for Augusta.
Reed tossed six-plus innings for the Saints and allowed two hits and two runs to go along with three walks and four strikeouts.
Escue collected two singles for Flagler.
Flagler visits Armstrong State University on Wednesday (March 23) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
