LAKELAND, Fla. – Flagler College relief pitcher
Tinsley Smith broke the school record for saves in a season with two more tonight in a doubleheader sweep at Florida Southern College Wednesday night at Barnett Field. Flagler won the opener 4-1 and then took the nightcap, 3-1.
Flagler improved to 16-9 overall while Florida Southern falls to 8-9-1.
In the opener,
Keeley Murray socked a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to break open a 1-all tie.
Malloree Escue started off the inning by reaching on an infield single and then took second base when the Florida Southern second baseman's throw to first was wild. She took third on a wild pitch and then
Mackenzie Conley drew a walk to put runners on the corners. A ground out to third moved
Brielle Dougherty, who pinch ran for Conley, to second base and then Murray changed the game with one swing of her bat.
That chased Florida Southern starter Hannah Loyer (1-3) from the game. She tossed 5.1 innings, allowed four hits and three earned runs. Loyer walked three and struck out seven.
Haleigh Corbally (7-4) picked up the win in the circle for the Saints. She tossed five innings, allowed three hits and one unearned run with a walk and a strikeout.
Tinsley Smith broke the school record for saves in a season with her sixth. The previous record was held by Katie Enright who had five saves in 2012. Smith pitched two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out a batter.
Murray finished with two hits and three runs batted in.
Tori Volz and Escue had the other base hits.
Maggie Roberts hit a double for the Moccasins. Jordan Alexander, Loyer and Katie Patterson had the other singles.
In the nightcap, another Florida Southern miscue helped Flagler take a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.
Dougherty led off with an infield single, a tapper back to the circle, and then took second when the Moccasin catcher tried to pick her off at first base. Two batters later, Volz singled Dougherty home from third base to break the 1-all tie.
In the sixth, the Saints got an insurance run when PBC Freshman of the Week,
Garland Evans, scored Dougherty with a single up the middle. Dougherty preceded Evans with a two-out double to left-center.
Callie Reed (6-3) picked up the win after scattering five hits in four innings and allowing one run. Smith recorded her seventh save after tossing three scoreless innings.
Whitney Woodard led the Saints with three infield singles. Volz collected two singles with one RBI while Dougherty went 2-for-3 with a double and she scored two runs.
Jessica Trana (0-1) suffered the loss for Florida Southern. She tossed 4.1 innings, allowed seven hits and two runs.
Erica Morrissey and Trana each collected two singles. Morrissey scored the lone run for the Mocs.
Flagler steps back into Peach Belt Conference play with a doubleheader at Francis Marion University on Sunday (March 6) at 1 p.m.
