Maiocco and Saints baffle Buccaneers

ST. AUGUSTINE – Michael Maiocco tossed 7.1 innings and fanned 10 batters to help Flagler College to a 6-2 win over Barry University in a non-conference baseball game Saturday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 12-11 overall and extended its winning streak to four games. Barry fell to 16-9.

In the seventh inning with the score tied at 2-all, Nick Oberg hit a lead-off double to right field and Jake Hathaway followed with a walk. Jabe Molinaro laid down a sacrifice bunt between the plate and the mound and when Barry starter Alex Lavandero charged the ball he slipped and booted the ball to load the bases. Bryce Evans followed with a ground ball to second, but the Buccaneers could not turn the double play, settling for the force out at second base and Oberg scored the go-ahead run.

The Saints sent eight men to the plate in the eighth inning and tagged on three more insurance runs. Hathaway and Molinaro drew back-to-back bases loaded walks.

Maiocco (4-1) scattered eight hits and allowed two runs for the Saints. Kyle Schackne earned his first save of the season after closing the game, pitching the last 1.2 innings without allowing a run. He fanned three batters.

Dylan Jones collected a pair of singles for the Saints. Kolin McMillen hit an RBI triple in the third inning.

Lavandero (3-1) tossed seven-plus innings. He allowed four hits and five runs to go along with six walks and eight strikeouts.

Kyle Pangallo went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the fourth inning. He scored two runs. Frank Gonzalez collected two singles for the Buccaneers.

Both teams will meet in a doubleheader at noon at Drysdale Field to conclude the three-game series.
