No. 37 Flagler opens season triumphantly over Eckerd

ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 37 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll) Flagler College rolled to a 7-2 season-opening win over Eckerd College in a non-conference baseball game Friday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.

Flagler won its sixth consecutive lid lifter and it was its 10th win in its last 11 season openers. Eckerd evened its record at 1-1.

The Saints wasted little time getting on the board. Frankie Sagarese and James Jean hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the second inning to stake Flagler to a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Lorenzo Butler hit an RBI-double to center field and the next batter, Igor Baez, hit a single through the left side of the infield scoring Butler from second.

Baez hit a two-run single in the fifth.

That would be more than enough for preseason All-Peach Belt Conference pitcher Mike O'Reilly (1-0). He tossed seven innings, scattered five hits and allowed one run. He struck out seven batters. O'Reilly retired the first 13 of 15 batters he faced. The Tritons did not get a runner into scoring position until the fifth inning. He retired 11 batters on fly outs.

Nick Martinez and Jeremy Graf finished the game.

Jean went 3-for-5 with a pair of double and a run batted in. Baez had his two single which knocked in three runs. Kolin McMillen had a single and walked three times which led him to score three runs. Dylan Jones singled twice and scored a run.

Lucas Luopa collected three singles for Eckerd. Rowdy Andrew belted a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning and break up the shutout.

Jack Silberman (0-1) tossed three innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs. He was the first of six pitchers used by the Tritons.

The same two teams meet in a doubleheader at noon tomorrow.
