Corbally and Saints sweep Wildcats

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Haleigh Corbally (6-8) won both games of Tuesday's (April 7) non-conference doubleheader for Flagler College at Fort Valley State University at Wildcat Field. She struck out 16 batters as Flagler won the opener 9-0 in five innings and took game two, 5-2.

Flagler improved to 11-30 overall while Fort Valley State dropped to 8-19.

In the opener, Corbally tossed a one-hit shutout with a season-high 10 strikeouts. She allowed a lead-off single by Asia Buckner in the first inning and then retired the next 15 batters in a row.

The Saints took advantage of nine Wildcat miscues to score nine runs. Flagler jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with four hits and one costly error for Fort Valley allowing three of the four runs to be unearned. Lauren Roudabush started the game with a single. Tori Volz followed with a walk. Roudabush took third on a ground out which forced Volz at second base. Maddy Murphy hit a ground ball to shortstop which was booted and Roudabush scored to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Hollianne Dohrn and Hannah Hudson hit back-to-back doubles later in the inning. Dohrn's was a two-run double.

Volz hit her first career home run, a two-run shot in the second and then the Saints added three more in the fifth to force the mercy rule. Flagler took advantage of seven Fort Valley State errors in the fifth inning.

Volz went 3-for-3 with the home run and two runs batted in. Roudabush singled twice, scored two runs and drove in another. Kelli Parker collected two singles and scored a run.

Alexis Ricks (7-9) allowed 10 hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out four for the Wildcats.

In game two, Corbally came in relief of Katelynn Smith who got into trouble in the third inning. Corbally tossed 4.2 scoreless innings and added six strikeouts. She allowed only two hits.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead through two and one-half innings, scoring a run in the first on a wild pitch and another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Malloree Escue.

The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the third on Kenya Shakoor's two-run triple. From there, Corbally came in and shut down the Wildcat offense again.

Hannah Hudson reached on an error by the third baseman with two outs in the sixth inning. She stole second and then scored when Dohrn hit a ball to the Fort Valley shortstop who made an error.

The Saints added two insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI triple by Volz who then scored on a sacrifice hit by Escue.

Murphy had two hits for the Saints.

Ricks (7-10) took the loss for Fort Valley State. She tossed seven innings, scattered four hits, allowed four earned runs, walked three and fanned two.
