O’Reilly fans 11 to lead No. 18 Flagler to 11-5 victory

AUGUSTA, Ga. – No. 18 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College got a strong pitching performance from starter Mike O'Reilly (5-2) in route to an 11-5 win at Georgia Regents University Augusta Friday night in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Flagler improved to 25-7 overall and 12-6 in the Peach Belt. GRU Augusta fell to 12-19 overall and 6-10 in conference play.

O'Reilly set the tone early by retiring the first eight batters he faced. He allowed seven hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out a career-high 11 batters in eight innings of work. MacLain Larson finished the ninth.

O'Reilly was bolstered by a five-run spurt in the first inning by the Saints. Flagler sent 10 men to the plate and bashed out seven hits and the Jaguars committed a pair of errors. The Saints strung together four consecutive hits with Lorenzo Butler knocking in a run with his single. Later, Nick Oberg drove in a run with hit down the line and then Skylar Fox ripped a two-run single to right field to give Flagler a 5-0 lead.

Nick Kranick went opposite field (left field) for a solo home run in the second inning and the Saints added an unearned run in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Jaguars struck for single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, and scored two runs in eighth and one in the ninth.

Flagler scored two runs apiece in the eighth and ninth innings.

All nine starters for Flagler had at least one hit, but Andrew Brodbeck paced the 17-hit attack with three hits, all in his last three at bats. He was a home run shy of the cycle, scored two runs and had one run batted in. Shawn Hendon singled twice, scored a run and knocked in two more while Oberg collected a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in another. Butler went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and he scored three runs.

Tristan Jones (1-5) took the loss on the hill for the Jaguars. He surrendered 12 hits, allowed six earned runs, walked two and struck out five. He also committed three of GRU Augusta's five errors.

Clint Hardy collected two single and drove in two runs for the Jaguars. Kevin Dodson singled twice and scored a run.

The two teams will meet in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Lake Olmstead Stadium tomorrow (April 4).
