LAKELAND, Fla. – No. 16 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College and Florida Southern College combined for 22 runs, 32 hits and 10 pitchers saw action as Florida Southern would come away with a 13-9 win Tuesday night in a non-conference baseball game at Henley Field.
Florida Southern extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 18-17 overall. Flagler dropped to 28-11.
The Moccasins were able to take an early 4-0 lead as they scored four runs in the first inning. An RBI single by Chris Dennis followed by a sacrifice fly along with two wild pitches which scored runs is how Florida Southern was able to manufacture the lead.
The lead would not last long as the Saints erupted for four runs of its own in the second inning.
Jabe Molinaro had an RBI single and then Andrew Brobeck drove in two more with a double to right field.
The Mocs plated four more in retaliation in the bottom of the second. Dennis hit an RBI double and Jhalan Jackson's base hit up the middle scored two more. Florida Southern led the rest of the way.
Trailing 12-4 in the fifth, Flagler got a two-run double by
Skylar Fox and then in the sixth inning,
Lorenzo Butler and
Todd Juliano sandwiched a pair of RBI singles around a sacrifice fly and all of sudden the Saints had trimmed the deficit to 12-9.
Florida Southern got an insurance run in the sixth on an infield single by Dennis.
A.J. Smith (4-1), the starter, was credited with the victory after tossing two innings. He allowed six hits and three earned runs. He was the first of four pitchers used by the Mocs.
Dennis went a perfect 5-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and four runs batted in. Sam Machonis collected three singles and scored three runs. Jason Sierra belted a three-run home run.
Michael Maiocco (5-4) took the loss in relief for the Saints. He surrendered eight hits and six earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched. He was one of six pitchers used by the Saints.
Chris Dious and
Brandan Keen each pitched a scoreless inning in relief and both recorded two strikeouts.
Butler hit three singles, scored a run and drove in another. Fox went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and he scored a run. Brodbeck went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and he knocked in two runs.
Flagler hosts Georgia Southwestern State University in its final homestand of the season which starts Friday (April 17) at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
