ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College and the University of North Carolina Pembroke split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Sunday (April 12) afternoon at Flagler Field on "Senior Day." The Lady Braves won the opener 4-3 and the Saints salvaged a split by winning game two, 3-1.
Prior to the game, the Saints honored their one senior,
Lauren Roudabush.
Flagler moves to 13-32 overall and 4-14 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke leaves with a 22-21 record and a 6-16 mark in conference play.
In the opener, the Saints jumped ahead early, 3-0, with three all three runs being scored in the first inning. But the Lady Braves plated two in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game at 3-all.
In the top of the seventh, Kaylee Wilson led off with a double to left-center and then was sacrificed over to third by Karlee Wilson. Whitney Jackson followed by laying down a bunt in front of the plate that settled on the first base line chalk which allowed Wilson to score from third. As the Saints waited for the ball to go foul, Jackson rounded first and headed to second base which was left unoccupied. She was stranded there as the next two batters were retired.
After a lead-off single by
Malloree Escue in the bottom of the seventh, the Saints went down in order as Escue got doubled off first base on
Hollianne Dohrn's line out to the shortstop.
Kayla Fuller struck out.
Katie Saunders (13-12) scattered five hits and allowed three runs while striking out five batters to earn the win for UNCP.
Jackson collected a pair of singles and drove in a run. Brea Hartley hit a two-run home run to dead center in the third inning.
Haleigh Corbally (6-10) allowed eight hits, four runs, walked one and struck out six for the Saints.
Five different Saints had hits, including
Maddy Murphy who belted a three-run home run to center field in the first inning.
In game two,
Katelynn Smith (3-9) earned the win for Flagler after scattering eight hits and allowing one run while striking out four batters. She retired seven of the last eight batters she faced.
Like the first game, the Saints scored all of their runs in one inning. Escue hit a two-run home run while
Hannah Hudson added an RBI single.
UNC Pembroke took an early 1-0 lead on a Taylor Gerhart sacrifice fly in the third inning.
Tori Volz added a double for Flagler while Roudabush,
Mackenzie Conley and
Rachel Hudson each added a single.
Saunders (13-13), in her second game of the day, scattered six hits and allowed three runs to go along with five strikeouts for UNCP.
Kaylee Wilson hit a pair of doubles.
Flagler wraps up its home schedule on Tuesday (April 14) at 4 p.m. against Armstrong State University at Flagler Field.
