ST. AUGUSTINE – Palm Beach Atlantic University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Flagler College, 2-0 and 4-2, on Sunday (March 29) afternoon at Flagler Field.
Palm Beach Atlantic improved to 22-17 overall while Flagler fell to 8-29.
In the opener, Rachel Hill (10-2) tossed a two-hit shutout to lead PBA. She walked two and fanned four. Hill retired the last 13 of 15 batters she faced.
Hill got all of the offense she would need in the fifth inning when Brianna Rano hit a one-out double to right-center, and then after she moved to third on a single, Rano scored on Stephanie Garrels' base hit up the middle to give the Sailfish a 1-0 lead.
Victoria Gonzalez added some insurance with a lead-off home run to left-center in the seventh inning.
Haleigh Corbally (3-7) was the hard-luck loser in the circle for Flagler. She went the distance and scattered five hits, allowed two runs, walked a batter and tied her season-high with nine strikeouts.
Lauren Roudabush had two singles for the Saints.
In game two, Flagler took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, but PBA was able to score three runs and escape with a win.
Corbally (3-8), working in her third inning of relief, gave up a lead-off double by Rano into the right field corner. Pinch hitter Loren Kilgore drew a walk and then Karina Langer reached on a fielder's choice bunt that she dropped down to third baseman
Hannah Hudson. Hudson fielded the ball and tried to make a jump throw to third, but Rano beat the throw to load the bases. Two batters later, Kayla Knight hit a pop up into deep short and the ball fell between Flagler's shortstop and left fielder which allowed the run to score to tie the game at 2-all. Corbally followed by uncorking a wild pitch to allow the eventual game-winning to score (Theresa Butler who had re-entered the game for Kilgore). The Sailfish tacked on an insurance run on a sacrifice fly.
The Saints were retired in order in the seventh by reliever Amber Johnson (2-5) who earned the win. She tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowed one hit and struck out a batter.
Corbally tossed three innings in relief for the Saints. She allowed three hits, three runs, walked two and struck out one.
Katelynn Smith started and surrendered three hits and one run in four innings of work. She walked one and fanned three.
Hannah Hudson had an RBI single in the third and Roudabush had a sacrifice fly in the same inning.
Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday (April 1) at the University of South Carolina Aiken at 3 p.m.
