MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 8 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College rallied by scoring all of its runs in two innings to top No. 5 Florida Tech 5-1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
Flagler won its fifth game in a row and improved to 23-4 overall. Florida Tech had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 24-4.
Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the fifth inning,
Todd Juliano led off with a single up the middle and was sacrificed over to second by
Nick Oberg.
Shawn Hendon followed with a single to left field, but Juliano was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game. Hendon trotted to second on the throw. After a walk was issued to
Skylar Fox,
Igor Baez hit a triple down the right field line that just eluded the glove of a diving Daniel Szpik. That hit put the Saints on top 2-1.
Flagler added three insurance runs in the sixth with the help of RBI-singles by
Lorenzo Butler and Juliano as well as an RBI-double by Hendon.
Danny Brown (6-2) picked up the win in relief for the Saints. He tossed two shutout innings, allowed three and struck out one batter. Brown was one of five Flagler pitchers to throw this evening.
Nathaniel Abel (3IP) started, Brown followed, then
Mike O'Reilly (2IP) as well as one inning stints by
Chris Lake and
Michael Hanke. The relievers combined to throw six scoreless innings, allow five hits and strike out six batters.
Hendon finished going 2-for-4 with the double, one run batted in and he scored a run. Juliano singled twice, scored a run and drove in another.
Ty Cohen (4-1) took the loss on the hill for the Panthers. He allowed seven hits and five runs in his 5.2 innings of work. He did strike out six batters.
Grant McKown collected two singles and drove in a run for Florida Tech. Tyler Doughty singled twice.
Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Columbus State University starting with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday (March 28).
