No. 13 Georgia College sweeps Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 13 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Georgia College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader at Flagler College, 5-2 and 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Georgia College extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 26-4 overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 7-20 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

In the opener, Marisa Boyette (13-1) tossed a complete game four-hitter and both of the runs she allowed were unearned. She walked two and struck out seven batters. Boyette induced nine fly outs.

The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead until the Saints evened things up in the bottom of the third inning. Lauren Roudabush reached first on a bunt back to the pitcher, Boyette, but the throw to first base was too high and allowed Roudabush to take second base. Tori Volz socked a base hit to the left-center field gap to plate Roudabush from second. Volz was able to scamper to second on the throw to the plate. Mackenzie Conley followed by doubling to the right-center field gap scoring Volz.

But Georgia College would score two more in the sixth and added one more in the seventh for the win. In the sixth, with a runner on first, Taylor Campbell hit a double to center field to put runners on second third with no one out. Lacey Najafi dropped down a squeeze bunt to Volz at third base whose flip to home plate was just a hair too late. With runners on the corners, pinch runner Jessica Hayles drew a throw from Conley to second base, but the throw went off the top of the second baseman's glove and into the outfield allowing another run to score.

Abi LeRoy added an RBI-triple in the top of the seventh. She drove in two runs to lead the Bobcats.

Haleigh Corbally (2-3) had a solid outing as she went the distance, scattered four hits, allowed four earned runs, walked two and fanned seven. She induced seven fly outs and seven ground outs.

Volz collected a pair of singles, scored a run and drove in another for the Saints.

In game two, Carly Lewis (10-3) tossed a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts for the Bobcats. She forced Flagler batters to ground out eight times and fly out seven times.

All of the offense Lewis needed came in the second inning. With two outs and two on base, Hannah Coursey belted a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left-center.

LeRoy hit a two-run homer in the third inning to stake the Bobcats to a 5-0 lead.

Georgia College added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings.

Nine different Bobcats recorded one hit. Baylee Hall had a pinch hit RBI-double.

Tinsley Smith (2-6) took the loss in the circle for the Saints. She tossed two innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs. Katelynn Smith tossed the last five and scattered four hits while allowing two runs. She struck out five.

Roudabush, Malloree Escue, Maddy Murphy, Hollianne Dohrn and Mallory Allen each collected a single for the Saints.

Flagler plays host to Georgia Regents University Augusta tomorrow (March 15) at noon at Flagler Field.
