Saints drop pair at CSU Classic on Friday

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Flagler College softball teams were defeated twice on the first day of the CSU Classic II Friday evening at Cougar Field. Flagler lost the opener 7-2 to Bellarmine University and then fell 7-1 to Catawba College.

Flagler falls to 4-11 on the season.

In the opener, the Knights scored the first run of the game on a Scarlett Powers squeeze bunt and that was all the offense until the fifth when Bellarmine plated three more runs.

Hannah Daunhauer hit a two-run single and then scored on Lillie Nitzken's double to the left-center gap to stake the Knights to a 4-0 lead.

Ally Foster (3-1) helped her own cause with a two-run home run in the sixth.

Maddy Murphy got the Saints on the board with a two-run single in the home-half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Knights added one more in the seventh on a solo home run by Tabby Shewmaker.

Foster tossed six innings, allowed four hits and two runs while walking two and fanning seven. She retired the first 12 batters she faced. Foster also led the offense going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Marlee Tevis collected two singles for Bellarmine.

Haleigh Corbally (0-1) tossed 4.2 innings, surrendered four hits and allowed three earned runs.

Murphy singled, doubled and drove in two runs while Mallory Allen also singled and doubled.

In the second game, Carley Tysinger (3-1) tossed a complete game six-hitter with 16 strikeouts and also hit a two-run home run in Catawba's four-run third inning.

Caroline Turner paced the offense for the Lady Indians with a triple, a home run , three RBI and she scored two runs.

Tori Volz (2-for-4) hit an RBI-double in the top of the seventh for the Saints.

Erin Anderson (1-3) pitched two-plus innings, allowed three hits and four runs. She fanned three batters.

Malloree Escue singled twice for the Saints.

Flagler closes out the tournament tomorrow (Feb. 28) with games against Lenoir-
Rhyne University at 11 a.m. and Lincoln Memorial University at 1 p.m.
