Saints push Falcons in 91-81 loss

ST. AUGUSTINE – The University of Montevallo needed to win just one game to clinch the Peach Belt Conference regular season title and they had to earn it with a 91-81 win against a tenacious Flagler College side Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Montevallo extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 20-8 overall and 16-2 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 9-16 overall and 4-14 in the conference play.

With the score tied at 37 at the half, the Falcons came out and scored the first 12 points and led by as many at 15 in the second half.

Flagler had rallied to within five (72-67) after a Jerrell Oxendine layup with 4:17 left to go. But Montevallo answered with a 9-4 run over the next 2:17 to put the game out of reach. The Saints would trim the deficit to six on three different occasions, but just couldn't get any closer.

Troran Brown scored a game-high 29 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the field. He added 10 assists to complete the double-double. Shykeem Jackson tallied 19 points while Bryant Orange chipped in with 17 points and six rebounds. Malik Fields contributed 16 points and nine rebounds. Larry Slaughter, who was averaging nearly 13 points coming into the game, was held to just two points due to foul trouble.

Montevallo made 58.1% (18-31) of its shots from the field in the second half and made 55% (33-60) in the game.

Dennis Diaz scored a team-high 24 points with the help of four 3-pointers for Flagler. Oxendine tallied 22 points while Matt Clark came off the bench to provide 14 points. Lydell Manigo chipped in with 11 points. Desmond Gibson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Flagler will close out the 2014-15 campaign on Wednesday (Feb. 25) against Armstrong State University at 7:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
