ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Flagler College softball team lost a pair of games to non-conference rival Barry on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Buccaneers won the first game, 9-5, and then beat the Saints again in game two, 9-7, through eight innings.
The pair of wins helped Barry improve to 6-3 on the year, while Flagler fell to 4-7.
Despite a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Saints were unable to make up for costly errors earlier in game one. A sixth-inning surge from the Bucs, fueled by two Flagler errors, led to the visitors taking an 8-1 lead over the Saints. Flagler would work to eliminate the deficit in the bottom of the seventh with the help of a triple from
Hollianne Dohrn, but it was not enough as the Bucs took game one.
Haley Wisemann (4-1) tossed a complete game for the Bucs.
Tinsley Smith (1-2) recorded 4.1 innings of work for Flagler, while
Erin Anderson and
Haleigh Corbally each got some time in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings apiece.
In the second game, Barry used three runs in the top of the eighth inning to break open a tie game.
The Bucs used a walk and two hits in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at 6-6 and send the game into an international tiebreaker. Julie Brito started the eighth inning on second base and advanced to third on a bunt single by Ashley Fernandez. Barry pushed its first run on the extra inning across as Kristina Pazienza singled to right field. Another single and a Flagler error gave the Bucs three runs in the inning.
Flagler was able to get one run in the bottom of the inning as Dohrn, who started the inning on second base, scored on a sacrifice fly from
Malloree Escue.
Mackenzie Conley led the way offensively for Flagler with three hits, while
Tori Volz and
Dreya Monayarji each contributed two hits.
Pazienza pitched the final 3.1 innings for Barry, earning her first win of the season. In the middle for the Saints
Katelynn Smith (1-3) logged seven innings of work, fanning four batters, and
Tinsley Smith came in during the final inning.
After an 11-game home stand the Saints will hit the road next Saturday (Feb. 21) for a game against Saint Leo at 6 p.m.
