Saints fight hard, but fall to No. 20 Pirates, 3-1

SAVANNAH, Ga. – For the fifth time in the least seven years, Flagler College and Armstrong State University faced each other in the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament final. For the second consecutive time No. 20 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Armstrong came out the victors, but had to fend off a stubborn Flagler team 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23) to earn its second consecutive tournament title.

Armstrong improved to 28-2 overall and receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional next weekend. Flagler, the lowest seeded team ever to advance to the tournament final (No. 7), ends the season with a 16-16 record.

Genel Sturgeon led the Saints with 12 kills and had only one error on 40 swings for a .275 hitting percentage. Taja Valmyr added 12 kills and nine digs while Sara Davis tacked on 11 kills and had three block assists. Caitlyn Kovach collected a team-high 12 digs while Amelia Morgan tallied 40 assists. Megan Hooks had seven kills and just one error on 19 swings with a .316 hitting percentage. She also had three block assists. Ashley Cheewah contributed six kills and four total blocks.

Flagler hit .252 for the match with 51 kills and 15 errors on 143 swings. In the second set alone, the Saints hit .382 with 15 kills and two errors on 34 swings.

Emily Wylie and Anna McGee led the Pirate attack as the team hit .312. Wyle recorded 15 kills and three errors on 32 swings for a .375 percentage while McGee had 15 kills with only one error on 31 swings for a .452 percentage. Stephanie Sfara recorded a double-double with 11 kills and a match-high 18 digs. Rachel Thompson added 10 kills. Kamryn Sherman tallied 49 assists.

Wylie was selected as the tournament's most valuable player. She was joined by her teammate, Sherman, on the all-tournament team. Valmyr and Morgan represented Flagler on the all-tournament team while Sarah Guidry of the University of Montevallo and Tarryn Angermeier of Lander University completed the all-tournament team.
