Flagler squeaks by USC Aiken in quarterfinal

AIKEN, S.C. – Taja Valmyr led a balanced attack with 13 kills and 11 digs as No. 7-seed Flagler College upset No. 2-seed University of South Carolina Aiken 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 26-24) in a Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday evening at the Convocation Center.

Flagler evened its record at 15-15 and advances to the tournament semifinal match on Friday in Savannah, Georgia where it will face Lander University, a 3-2 upset winner over No. 3-seed Georgia Regents University Augusta. USC Aiken fell to 21-8.

For Valmyr, it was her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. Sara Davis added 12 kills with two errors on 26 swings to hit a robust .385. Genel Sturgeon added eight kills and Megan Hooks tacked on seven more. Caitlyn Kovach led the defense with 21 digs. Ashley Lechleidner-Rodriguez and Rachel Bryant chipped in with 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Bryant also had four of Flagler's eight service aces.

Ashley Diedrich led the Pacers with a match-high 19 kills, 10 digs and seven block assists. Taylor Stratton added 12 kills and Julia Foster came off the bench to provide 11 kills. Sheila Walsh recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 15 digs. Monica Cardona collected a match-high 23 digs while Hannah Tierney recorded a match-high eight total blocks.

The match featured 17 ties and 10 lead changes.

Flagler won the first two sets, including a second set where both teams hit over .300. The Pacers forced a fourth set with a 25-23 win in the third.

Just like their match four days ago at Aiken (also a 3-1 win by Flagler), Valmyr led the Saints with six of their 12 kills. In that match four days ago, she had eight kills in the fourth set.

The Saints jumped out to a 9-1 lead with the help of five hitting errors by the Pacers. USC Aiken battled back and took a 13-12 lead on a kill by Stratton. The Saints looked to have the set and match put away after a service error by Cardona made the score 23-20 in favor of Flagler. A kill by Stratton followed by another by Diedrich pulled the Pacers to 23-22 and forced a Flagler timeout. Ashley Cheewah recorded a kill for the Saints to force match point. Then consecutive kills by Diedrich and Foster for USC Aiken tied the score at 24. But Valmyr closed the match with back-to-back kills.
