Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – Flagler College used a 26-5 run midway through the second half to rally past Armstrong Atlantic State University 87-85 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
Flagler improved to 11-12 overall and 7-9 in the Peach Belt. Armstrong suffered its second consecutive loss and dropped to 13-9 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Matt Clark 3-pointer with 17:46 to go ignited Flagler's 26-5 run which lasted 7:43 and wiped out a 14-point Armstrong lead. Clark capped the spurt with a layup giving the Saints a 62-55 lead with 10:03 left.
The Pirates rallied back and the lead would change hands four times until a
Ryan Barnes 3-pointer with 3:20 left gave the Saints a 76-74 lead. Flagler would never trail again.
Aric Miller made a pair of free throws with nine second left to cut Armstrong's deficit to one point (85-84), but
Matt Conway was fouled and he sank both free throws with eight second to go. Flagler fouled Kyle Clanahan with one-tenth of a second left. He stepped to the line and made the first shot and purposely missed the second. The tip-in off of the missed free throw came just after the horn to end the game sounded.
Clark scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in the second half. He sank five 3-pointers.
Ante Gospic recorded his team-leading ninth double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Conway came off the bench to supply 10 points.
Richard Brown added eight points and eight assists.
After struggling in the first half from the field, Flagler made 58.8% (20-34) of its shots in the second half and made 7-of-9 from the free throw line in the second half.
Antroine Williford scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Pirates. Miller added 13 points while Eric Eversley tacked on 13 more and tallied nine rebounds.
Armstrong out-rebounded Flagler, 45-35, and 17 of those were offensive boards. The Pirates tallied 16 second chance points. After shooting 55.2% in the first half, Armstrong cooled off and made just 35.3% of its shots in the second half.
Flagler hosts Francis Marion University on Wednesday (Feb. 20) at 7:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
