AUGUSTINE – Ishmael Hollis scored a team-high 19 points but it was Scott Windom's six points in overtime that helped North Georgia College & State University to defeat Flagler College in a grueling 92-87 victory in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
North Georgia won its fourth game in a row and improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler suffered its second consecutive loss and fell to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Hollis scored 12 of his 19 points in the first half. He added six rebounds in the game. Windom tallied 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while Corey Green chipped in with 12 points. Chris Tanzy recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 assists.
North Georgia shot 51.4% (36-70) from the field during the game and out-rebounded Flagler 39-28. NGCSU grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and cashed them in for 25 points. North Georgia also tallied 30 assists.
Ante Gospic scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Flagler.
Matt Clark added 16 points while
Ryan Barnes chipped in with 15 more.
Richard Brown contributed 10 points and dished out five assists.
Adam Jones finished with nine points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Flagler shot 53.3% (32-60) for the game, but went 3-for-9 in the overtime period. Flagler had trouble at the line hitting 56% (14-25) of its attempts.
The game was close throughout with 12 ties and 14 lead changes. North Georgia had the largest lead of the game, 37-28, after Lamar Richardson sank a 3-pointer with 3:36 left in the first half. North Georgia held a slim 39-37 lead at the half.
Flagler caught North Georgia when Clark sank a 3-pointer to give the hometown Saints a 47-45 lead with 15:19 to go.
Flagler battled back again with under five minutes left. Five different Flagler players scored in a 12-3 run which concluded with Brown making a layup with 2:41 left to give Flagler a 76-74 lead.
With 43 seconds left in regulation, Barnes hit a pull-up jumper to give Flagler an 80-78 lead, but Hollis scored on the opposite end on a layup with 22 second left. Brown's jumper at the buzzer hit off the back rim and caromed out.
JC Ward and Wisdom got North Georgia off to a quick start in overtime with a pair of baskets.
Trailing by three (88-85), Jones stole the ball at the top of the key and dribbled down uncontested for a fastbreak dunk. But, Windom answered with a transition layup with 49 seconds left to put the game away.
Flagler will break for the holiday, but will return to action Dec. 29-30 at the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament held at Rollins College. Flagler will take on Shaw University on Dec. 29.
