ST. AUGUSTINE – Andrew Houts led five players in double figures with 16 points as Columbus State University held off a late rally by Flagler College in a 76-73 win in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Thursday night at Flagler Gym.

Columbus State improves to 9-12 on the season and 5-7 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 9-12 and 3-10 in conference play.

Jamarquis Stevenson added 14 points while Steve Peterson and Jonathan Murphy combined to score 26 points and grab 14 rebounds (13 points and 7 rebounds each). Paul Darkwa added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Cougars made six 3-pointers and were led by Houts' four on the night. Columbus State corralled 12 offensive rebounds and turned those into 22 second chance points. 

Kenny Moore (Vero Beach, Fla., Vero Beach HS) scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for the Saints. John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla., New Hampton Prep (N.H.)) added 14 points and Chad July (Fort White, Fla., Bridgton (Maine) Academy) supplied 12 points and five rebounds. Ryan Barnes (Oviedo, Fla., Newberry College) came off the bench to score nine points.

The Saints held a 12-point advantage midway through the first half and led 35-34 at the break. Both teams struggled from the field as Flagler went 39.4% (13-33) and Columbus State made 38.2% (13-34) of its shots.

The Cougars came out of the half and out-scored the Saints 21-9 in the first 8:08 and never trailed again. Columbus State built up a 13-point lead (68-55) after a Murphy jumper with 6:19 left to play.

Flagler countered with its own 18-6 run, capped by a traditional three-point play by Pietkiewicz who scored a basket on a layup and was fouled on the play. He sank the free throw and the Saints trailed 74-73 with eight seconds to go.

Peterson was fouled with six seconds left and made both free throw attempts. Flagler had one chance left, but a travelling call nullified any attempt the Saints could get.
