Pirates roll to 111-81 win over Saints

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Aric Miller led five players in double-figures with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field to lead Armstrong Atlantic State University to a 111-81 triumph over Flagler College in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Armstrong improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 6-2 and 0-1 in conference play.

Chris Vanlandingham added 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Pirates while Keyshore Williams contributed 17 points and eight rebounds. J.C. Winn came off the bench to tally 14 points and grab seven rebounds. He made 6-of-9 from the field, five of which were dunks. DeVon Jones added 12 points and six rebounds. Austin Edens handed out eight assists while Mychal Horn tallied five steals.

Armstrong enjoyed a 70-44 advantage in points in the paint and held a 39-5 edge in fast break points. The Pirates also induced 22 turnovers which they converted into 26 points. Armstrong shot 56.6% (47-83) from the field, including a 62.5% (25-40) performance in the second half.

Chad July (Fort White, Fla., Bridgton (Maine) Academy) recorded his sixth double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for Flagler. Ante Gospic (Zadar, Croatia, Polk State College) added 16 points and six rebounds while Addison Smith (West Palm Beach, Fla., College of Central Florida) tallied 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Pirates stormed out of the gates by scoring on six-of-their-first-seven possessions to take a 12-2 lead. The margin grew to 15 after an Edens 3-pointer gave Armstrong a 23-8 lead with 13:18 left.

A Desmond Gibson (Havana, Fla., James S. Rickards HS) 7-foot jumper cut the deficit to six (25-19), but the Pirates went on a 22-9 run capped by an Edens layup with 1:51 to go to give Armstrong a 47-28 lead. The Pirates held a 47-34 lead at the half.

Flagler will break for final exams and then head to USC Aiken on Dec. 10 for a 3:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference tilt.
