MELBOURNE – Brandon Herbert scored 11 of his game-high 20 points as the University of the District of Columbia rallied to defeat Flagler College 83-70 in the first round of the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament Friday afternoon at the Clemente Center.

UDC improved to 4-1 on the season and will face the winner of P.R.-Rio Piedras-Florida Tech at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow. Flagler suffered its first loss and fell to 4-1 and will face the loser in the consolation game tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Nigel Munson added 14 points, seven rebounds and dished out seven assists. Dishawn Bradshaw tallied 15 points and Dyrek Jones came off the bench score 12 points, grab six rebounds and tally four steals. Ziad Ashmawy collected a game-high 12 rebounds and blocked two shots while Diyaaldin Kelley swatted four shots.  

The Firebirds forced 18 Saint turnovers and converted them into 21 points.

Jarrod Branco (Hudson, Fla., Hudson HS) recorded a team-high 15 points for the Saints. Chad July (Fort White, Fla., Bridgton (Maine) Academy) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ante Gospic (Zadar, Croatia, Polk State College) chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds while Addison Smith (West Palm Beach, Fla., College of Central Florida) tacked on 11 points.

After a Smith 3-pointer gave Flagler a 37-27 lead with 8:22 left in the first half, UDC went on a 14-6 run to close the gap to 43-41 at the half.

A Herbert 3-pointer with 12 minutes left in the half sparked a 24-13 run by the Firebirds which covered 9:53. Munson sank two free throws to complete the run with 2:07 left.

The Saints were held to 33.3% (10-30) shooting from the field in the second half. The Firebirds held a 43-41 edge in rebounding, including 13 offensive rebounds.
