DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Clarence Tillman scored 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half as North Georgia College & State University defeated Flagler College 87-83 in overtime in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Memorial Hall.
North Georgia won its third game in a row an improved to 6-11 overall and 3-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its fourth consecutive game and fell to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Tillman, a reserve, struggled from the field making just 37.5% (6-16) of his shots, but he made 10-of-14 free throws. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Chaun Tinney added 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds while Carl Taylor chipped in with 11 points. Taylor sank three 3-pointers.
NGCSU held a 48-40 edge in rebounds and made 29 free throws, including 7-of-8 in overtime which accounted for all of its points in the extra session.
Eddie Fowler (Deltona, Fla., Pasco-Hernando CC) scored a season-high 23 points and added nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Chad July (Fort White, Fla., Bridgton (Maine) Academy) scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half.
Kenny Moore (Vero Beach, Fla., Vero Beach HS) recorded his team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. He shot an economical 66.7% (6-9) from the field.
John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla., New Hampton Prep (N.H.)) chipped in with 13 points before fouling out with 113 seconds left in regulation.
Flagler shot 60% (18-30) in the second half, but struggled in overtime hitting just 16.7% (1-6), all from 3-point range.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. Flagler shot 37.5% (9-24) and North Georgia shot at a 35.5% (11-31) clip. A Marquez Jackson four-foot jumper with 6:12 left in the first half capped a 19-2 run by North Georgia and gave the hometown Saints a 24-13 lead. NGCSU took a 34-27 lead into the break.

Justin Stokes (Jacksonville, Fla., Florida Gulf Coast U.) layup put Flagler on top 64-62 with 8:05 left in the second half, but Tillman answered with a six-foot jumper to tie the game, and then he sank two free throws to give North Georgia the lead again, 66-64.
With 16 seconds left, July was fouled and he sank a pair of free throws to cut the North Georgia lead to 79-78. Pietkiewicz committed his fifth foul of the half, with 13 seconds left, so Flagler could get the ball back. Tinney stepped to the line and made the first free throw, but missed the second. Moore grabbed the rebound for Flagler and then called timeout as the ball crossed half-court. North Georgia followed with a 30-second timeout, but Moore knocked down a jumper with a couple of ticks left on the clock to push the game to overtime.
Fowler was the only player to make a basket between either team in overtime. In fact his triple gave Flagler an 83-82 lead, its first lead since Stokes' basket midway through the second half. But North Georgia would go to the line and sink free throws – 7-8 in the extra session.
Flagler will re-group and host Clayton State University on Saturday (Jan. 29) at 3:30 p.m. The game is part of the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Weekend. Both coaching staffs will be wearing sneakers, with their suits, to show their support, and awareness, of cancer and its care and prevention. The American Cancer Society will be on hand to accept donations.
