ST. AUGUSTINE – Robert Huntington came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field as Nova Southeastern University defeated Flagler College 76-66 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Flagler Gym.
Nova Southeastern snapped its three-game losing streak and evened its record at 4-4. Flagler was dealt its first loss of the season and dropped to 6-1.
Alex Gynes added 16 points, including seven coutresy of free throws for the Sharks. Lukas Roesch added 10 points and five rebounds while Ross Allsop nearly completed the double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Kenny Moore (Vero Beach, Fla., Vero Beach HS) recorded his fourth double-double of the year with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Eddie Fowler (Deltona, Fla., Pasco-Hernando CC) added 10 points while
D.J. Ferguson (Orlando, Fla., Bishop Moore Catholic HS) chipped in with 11 points and tallied a game-high nine assists.
Nova Southeastern opened the game with an 11-4 lead and led and by as many as 13 points (26-13) after a jumper from Gynes. Flalger trimmed the deficit to two points (28-26) after
Dave Clark's (St. Augustine, Fla., Pedro Menendez HS) jumper with 3:03 left, but an 11-3 run by the Sharks gave them a 10-point advantage (39-29) at the break. NSU shot 46.9% (15-32) from the field in the first half.
In the second half, the Saints trailed 46-35 with 15:35 to play but went on a 17-5 run over the next 4:45.
Ryan Barnes (Oviedo, Fla., Newberry College) capped the run with a three-pointer giving the Saints a 52-51 advantage. It would be the last time Flagler had a lead. NSU responded with a 9-2 run to regain control, 60-54. Moore answered with a lay-up and a free throw to get Flagler to within three (60-57), but Nova Southeastern countered with a 13-6 run to put the game away. Seven of the points the Sharks scored in the run came from the free throw line.
Nova Southeastern held Flagler to 18.5% (5-24) shooting from three-point range and a season-low 40.3% (25-62) shooting from the field.
Flagler returns to action on Dec. 29, at 5 p.m., against Winston-Salem State University at the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament in Winter Park, Fla.
