ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –
John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla., New Hampton Prep (N.H.) scored a season-high 28 points on 6-of-11 shooting from behind the arc to lead Flagler College past Ave Maria University 87-79 in a non-conference men's basketball game Thursday night at Flagler Gym. Pietkiewicz broke Flagler's career 3-point field goal record previously held by Pete Rhoden (251, 1995-99) with 16:35 to go in the game. He now has 256 treys.
Flagler improved its record to 2-0 while Ave Maria dropped to 3-2.
Jarrod Branco (Hudson, Fla., Hudson HS) and
Ryan Barnes (Oviedo, Fla., Newberry College) came off the bench to score 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Chad July (Fort White, Fla., Bridgton (Maine) Academy) nearly completed the double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
D.J. Ferguson (Orlando, Fla., Bishop Moore Catholic HS) tallied six points and dished out a game-high 12 assists.
Kiel Lewis led the Gyrenes with 22 points as he hit 9-of-13 from the foul line. Jimmy Torney notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Chris Scanlan chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.
Leading 25-19 with 5:23 to go in the first half, Flagler would go on a 13-4 run to close the half and go into the locker rooms with a 37-23 lead. The Saints hit two free throws and five field goals during that stretch.
Over the first four minutes of the second half, Flagler would double its lead to 52-26 with a 15-2 run. Pietkiewicz added two three-point shots while Barnes and Branco added two jumpers.
The Gyrenes rallied with a 43-26 run over the next 12:15 to pull to within nine points after a pair of free throws by Torney. Ave Maria opened the run with a 20-8 spurt.
The two teams combined for 59 fouls and 82 free throws.
Flagler returns to Flagler Gym on Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
