ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. −
Nathan Van Der Sluys laid down a squeeze bunt just far enough down the first base line to plate a charging
Kenny Ray from third base to give Flagler College a hard-fought 6-5, 13-inning marathon win over Northwood University in a non-conference baseball game Friday night at Flagler Stadium. The Saints snap a 10-game losing streak and improve to 4-10 on the season. The Seahawks suffer their fourth consecutive loss and drop to 13-4.
Ray hit a one-out single to center to ignite the Saints offense.
Joey Rivera belted a double down the left field line and Ray just beat the throw at third. Van Der Sluys, on the first pitch he saw from Northwood reliever Jonathan Velasquez, dropped down the bunt coring the game winning run. Van Der Sluys came in as a pinch runner in the 10th inning and took over as the designated hitter.
The Saints had a 4-0 lead after plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Jordan McClure ripped a two-run triple to key the inning.
The Seahawks rallied in the top of the seventh with four runs of their own to knot the game 4-4. Adam Bornstein belted a two-run double in the frame for Northwood.
Northwood had an opportunity in the top of the ninth to take a lead. Nathan Forsyth singled to left field and Corey Cooke, who started on second base, tried to come around and score but
Glenn Kiture threw a strike to home plate to end the inning.
In the 10th inning, McClure made an outstanding catch in foul territory as he corralled a fly ball hitting the fence by the Flagler bullpen, but hung on to make the catch. He would come up big in the field again in the 11th when he snared Bornstein's line drive in right-center and then pivoted and fired to first base to force out Eric Woodward who had drifted off the base towards second.
Northwood took the lead in the top of the 12th when Flagler reliever
Wes Burgess threw a wild pitch to score Nathan Forsyth.
The Saints tied the game in the home half on Kiture's triple, which just missed clearing the right field fence by inches.
Burgess (2-2) retired the side in order in the top of the 13th and he earned the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings.
Austin Donmoyer went 6.1 for the Saints and allowed four hits, four runs and fanned nine.
Velasquez (3-2) pitched the final third of an inning for the Seahawks and allowed three hits and the final run.
Kiture doubled, tripled, scored a run and drove another in for the Saints. McClure had two hits, including the triple, and drove in a pair of runs. Ray and River both singled and doubled, but Ray scored twice.
Sam Bridgeman and
Cale Owen each collected a pair of singles.
Corey Cooke singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Seahawks. Neil Forsyth and Steve Brodt combined to strikeout 20 Flagler batters.
The same two teams meet in a doubleheader tomorrow (Feb. 23) at 1 p.m.
NOTE: The 13-inning contest is longest game on record in terms of innings played and the 4:51 time length is also the longest game on record in terms of time. The game also included a 25-minute delay as two light standards lost power.
