MIAMI SHORES, Fla. − Chad Bishop scored a game-high 19 points in Barry University's 75-70 come from behind win over Flagler College in a non-conference men's basketball game Monday night at the Health & Sports Center. Barry won its second game in a row and improves to 8-18 overall. Last Saturday, the Buccaneers upset 13th-ranked Tampa 60-55. Flagler had its season-high eight-game win streak snapped and drop to 20-6 overall.
The Saints shot a blistering 52.2% (12-23) in the first half, but were held to 30.6% (11-36) shooting in the second half by the Sunshine State Conference's best defensive team – allowing only 66.0 points per game.
Flagler led by as many as 15 (32-17) with 6:31 left in the half, but the Bucs closed the half on a 15-3 run to trail by three, 35-32, at the half.
Bishop's jumper with 7:02 left broke a 52-all tie and sparked a 15-5 Barry run. The Buccaneers never trailed again. Willie Whitfield added 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while Karega Tucker chipped in with 14 points. Gabe Lazo came off the bench to score 12 points, grab seven rebounds and dish out four assists.
The Saints were able to close to within two (69-67) on a
Jon Matthews (Daytona Beach, Fla./Atlantic HS) 3-pointer, but Bryan Chiverton sank four consecutive free throws for the Buccaneers and Lazo added two more with 12 seconds left.
Barry dominated in the paint, out-rebounding Flagler 42-32 including 13 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second chance points. The Buccaneers also out-scored the Saints in the paint 32-16.
Matthews scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range for Flagler.
Bryan Borstelmann (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) added 17 points. He made five 3-pointers. The Saints made 14 triples on the evening. #D.J. Ferguson# (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore HS) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 assists. He shattered the single-season assists record at Flagler in the game tonight. Brad Ridenour held the record with 197 in the 1993-94 season and Ferguson now has 205 assists with four games left to play.
Flagler will travel to the University of West Georgia to finish the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 23) at 1 p.m.
NOTE: For the first time this season, Flagler lost a game it led at the half. The Saints were 17-0 in games they led at the half. The last game Flagler lost after leading at the half was Nov. 28, 2006 against Embry-Riddle, 83-78, at Flagler Gym. Borstelmann moves into second place all-time in 3-pointers made with 233. He passed Chase Tramont (1998-02) who tallied 230. Pete Rhoden (1995-99) holds the record with 251 triples.
