Flagler falls twice on the road; Burkhardt sets school record

BOCA RATON, Fla. − The Flagler College volleyball team played a pair of matches today in two different locations. In the opener, Flagler fell to the University of Montevallo 3-2 (12-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15) in the DoubleTree Suites Regional Volleyball Crossover hosted by Lynn University and then lost at Barry University 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-15) at Miami Shores on Friday. Flagler extends its losing streak to three matches and falls to 15-11.

In the opener, Flagler's Justin Burkhardt (St. Augustine, Fla./Winthrop U.) became the school's all-time leader in kills with 1,283 besting Shola Osunfisan (2000-03) who held the record with 1,267. Burkhardt accomplished the feat in 107 fewer sets.

Montevallo (16-11) was led by Katy Handrick's 16 kills and a double-double from Lauren Tortorici (14 kills and 13 digs). Katie Johnson added 10 kills for the Lady Falcons. Kara Zawisza led the defense with 21 digs and Joy Peschman registered 44 assists.

Burkhardt led the Saints with a match-high 17 kills and added 14 digs and seven service aces. Meg Weathersby (Maitland, Fla./Orangewood Christian School) added 14 kills and 13 digs. Katie Beale (Stuart, Fla./Martin County HS) paced the defense with 18 digs while Rebecca Royal (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Fleming Island HS) and Kelly Boese (Broussard, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) each recorded five total blocks. Royal also tallied 26 assists.

Flagler hit a blistering .552 (18 kills and 2 errors on 29 swings) in the first set.

In the nightcap, the Saints had difficulty in slowing down the Buccaneer attack. Barry hit .296 (49 kills with 15 errors on 115 swings) for the match which included a .325 mark in the first set and a .303 clip in the third set.

Camilla Pagan recorded a match-high 23 digs and hit .400 for the match to lead Barry. Lauren Evans collected 17 digs while Libby Walter registered 38 assists.

Burkhardt finished her record-setting day with 12 kills and nine digs for the Saints. Cierra Pillsbury (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Allen D. Nease HS) led the defense with 15 digs while Royal tallied 14 assists.

Flagler will play three matches tomorrow (Oct. 18) starting with a 10 a.m. match at Lynn University. The Saints will head north to West Palm Beach to take on the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at 2 p.m. and then battle Palm Beach Atlantic University at 7 p.m., the latter two matches are at Rubin Arena at PBA.
