Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – NCAA Division I Appalachian State University came out and won Nos. 1 and 2 doubles won all but two singles matches en route to a 6-3 win over Flagler College Thursday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.
Appalachian State raises its record to 7-5 while Flagler, playing in its third consecutive match, loses its fifth in a row and falls to 3-7. The head coach for Appalachian State is Colin Crothers who was a three-tine NAIA All-American at Flagler from 1982-84.
Monica Burbelo (Westerly, R.I.) and Allison Hess (Panama City Beach, Fla.) teamed to get Flagler’s lone win in doubles play, 8-6, against ASU’s Mallory Cook and Caroline Mauch.
The Saints also got wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Maria Ospina (Oldsmar, Fla.) defeated Amanda Cash 5-7, 6-4 and 10-5 in a super tiebreaker. Femke Theile (Cologne, Germany) won at No. 5 singles defeating Caroline Mauch in straight sets 6-0 and 6-2.
Anja Gugger and Amanda Cash teamed to win at No. 1 doubles 8-3 while Monica Tomas and Lauren Holton won a close match at No. 2 doubles 9-8 (7-4). Tomas also went on to defeat Flagler’s Chelsi de Cuba (Fort Pierce, Fla.) 6-1 and 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Flagler College wraps up its season at home and will close out the remainder of its season on the road. The next match for the Saints will be Mar. 28 at Rollins College at 3:30 p.m.
