ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College split a non-conference doubleheader with Missouri Baptist University Monday afternoon at Flagler Stadium. Flagler (10-17) won the opener 8-2 and Missouri Baptist (10-6) rallied to win the nightcap 8-6.
In the opener, Flagler jumped on Missouri Baptist starter Blake Kearney (1-2), scoring three runs in the first inning. Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. Bryan Harrell (Granger, Ind./Lincoln Trail College) worked a full count walk to follow Owen. After Kearney struck out the next two batters Shane Darnofall (Corry, Pa./Hillsborough CC) belted a three-run homer, his second of the year, over the left field wall.
That would be all the support Flagler pitcher Kyle Cancallieri (Sarasota, Fla./Seminole CC) (2-0) would need as he tossed six innings and allowed seven hits, two runs (both unearned) and collected a pair of strike outs.
Wade Lamont (Sarasota, Fla./North Arkansas College) belted a solo home run, a team leading seventh of the year, in the third and Kenny Ray (St. Augustine, Fla./Lake-Sumter CC) socked a home run, his third of the year in the fifth to provide insurance.
Seven different Saints had one hit in the game.
Brandon Patek collected a pair of singles for the Spartans.

Flagler was up 6-2 going into the seventh inning but starter John Goryl (Apopka, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) was racking up a high pitch count. He started the inning by hitting the leadoff hitter, Victor Morales, who went on to steal second a few pitches later. Morales was then pinch ran for by Jack Kopacz. The next batter went down swinging, but Brad Arnett lifted a ball into left field and Kopacz advanced to third. The next batter, Brandon Patek, singled to left center, scoring Kopacz and Arnett took third. The next batter fanned but Scott Talbert doubled into the left field corner, scoring Arnett and Patek took third. With the score 6-4, Jim Roche (Hastings, Fla./St. Joseph Academy) came in to get the final out. He walked the first two batters he faced, the last one forced in a run to cut the Flagler lead to 6-5. Dayne Dyer came up to pinch hit and promptly singled through the left side scoring a pair of runs and the Spartans took a 7-6 lead. Kopacz came up and drew a walk to reload the bases. Jake Curran (Frankfort, Ill./Saint Xavier U.) came on to try and get the last out, but a passed ball allowed the Spartans’ eighth run to cross the plate nad the batter eventually reached on a walk. Curran did get the next batter to pop up to first base to end the inning. In all, 12 batters came up to the plate, there were six runs scored on four hits, one batter was hit by a pitch, four walks were issued and there was a passed ball and one error.
Flagler would get a base runner in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t rally for the tie or win.
