ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The 18th annual Flagler College Classic wrapped up with a couple of closely contested games, a stark contrast from last night’s games. Warner Southern College (9-6) held off a feisty Central Bible College (4-13) team 82-72 and Flagler College (6-8) did the same against North Carolina Wesleyan (4-7), winning 83-73 Thursday night at Flagler Gym.

Selected to the All-Classic Team were: Sam Jozenville (Orlando, Fla./Santa Fe CC) and #J.P. Clark# (St. Augustine, Fla./Allen D. Nease HS) of Flagler College; Errol Porteous and Brandon Hamilton of Warner Southern College; and, Kendall Alfaro of Central Bible College.

Daniel Marsh’s (Daytona Beach, Fla./Webber International U.) layup with 6:25 left to go in the game broke a 63-63 tie and started an 8-0 run by Flagler to put the game away.

North Carolina Wesleyan would threaten after a 5-foot jumper by Trey Drake drew them to 71-68 with 2:43 remaining, but the Saints scored the next seven points, five of which came from Bryan Borstelmann (Brandon, Fla./Manatee HS).

The Saints trailed only twice, in the early moments of the game, and held a 39-30 lead at the half.

The two teams combined for 35 turnovers (19 by Flagler and 16 by N.C. Wesleyan) and there were 41 fouls committed between both squads.

Jozenville scored a game-hig 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Saints. Borstelmann added 19 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots while Marsh tallied 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half, and also dished out five assists. Clark tallied 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Trey Drake led the Battling Bishops with 17 points and seven assists while Lenny Hall added 15 points and four assists. Sharard Carmichael tacked on 131 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Jarvis Cobb contributed 11 points off the bench.

Flagler College is off until Jan. 13 when they travel to Lake Wales to take on Warner Southern College at 7 p.m. North Carolina Wesleyan continues its Florida swing on Monday at Florida Christian College.

 In the opener, Danny Miller’s conventional three-point play ignited a 15-3 run by Warner Southern which broke open what was a close game and gave the Royals a 42-31 lead with 3:18 to go in the first half. Warner Southern would go into the break with a 48-40 lead.

The Royals took their biggest lead, 76-61, with 5:54 left to go in the game and held a double digit lead the rest of the way for an 82-72 win.

Errol Porteous led the Royals with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Brandon Hamilton tallied 13 points and five assists. Alex Castillo added 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Preston Adams came off the bench to score 11 points.

Kendall Alfaro scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds for Central Bible College, an NCCAA Division II school out of Springfield, Mo. Tim Perkins added 15 points and eight rebounds while Arjay Johnson finished with 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds. T.J. Blakeney chipped in 11 points and recorded four assists.

Warner Southern opens Florida Sun Conference play on Jan. 10 when they host No. 8 (NAIA Division II) Embry-Riddle at 7 p.m. Central Bible continues its Florida swing as they visit Southeastern University of Lakeland for the Assemblies of God Tournament Jan. 11-13.
