DeLAND, Fla. − Fredrik Ericsson’s (Uppsala, Sweden/Linneskolan) header off Joey Riley’s (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) free kick gave Flagler College a lead it would not relinquish in a 4-1 win over NCAA Division I Stetson University Wednesday night at a rain-soaked Stetson Soccer Field. The match was delayed an hour and a half at the start due to lightning and rain in the area. The win also marked Flagler’s first victory over a Division I team since Sept. 30, 2003, ironically enough, at Stetson, 5-4.

Gerson Penza (Willemstad, Curacao/St. Gregory’s U.) got Flagler (2-1-0) off on the right foot, scoring 20 seconds into the match when his shot hit the right post and into the net.

Armante Marshall of Stetson (1-4-0) scored the equalizer minutes later, when he beat Jordan Holtz (Clermont, Fla./South Lake HS) to the bottom right in the 4th minute.

Ericsson then scored his goal with under three minutes before both team would break for intermission.

Penza and David Iafrate (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) connected again, this time in the 63rd minute to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. Iafrate closed out the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute off a Sean Gormley (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee HS) pass.

Holtz recorded two saves for the Saints while his counterpart, Alessandro Barcherini allowed four goals and failed to save a shot.

Flagler out-shot Stetson 10-8 but the Hatters held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Flagler hosts St. Thomas University of Miami Gardens on Friday at 7 p.m. at Saints Field.
