SAINT LEO, Fla. − A 16-0 run to open the second half by Clayton State blew open a five-point halftime lead and propelled the Lakers to a 76-44 win over Flagler College in the opening round of the Sleep Inn Classic Friday evening at the Marion Bowman Activities Center at Saint Leo University. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Sharon Wiles led the Lakers with a game-high 20 points and added four steals. Nikkisha Pritchett came off the bench to pour in 12 points and grab five rebounds. Alecia Humphrey recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points. Shantel Ragin chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Lynette Jackson dished out eight assists for the Lakers.
Clayton State (1-0), the pre-season favorite in the Peach Belt Conference, struggled in the first 20 minutes, shooting just 28.3% (13-46) and Flagler (0-1) managed to hang around despite committing 19 turnovers.
Elizabeth Tuzzolo (Harvard, Mass./Drexel U.) got Flagler on the board first when she sank a 3-pointer, but the lead was short lived after a pair of free throws from Ragin and a 3-pointer from Pritchet gave Clayton State a 5-3 lead. The Saints wouldn’t be in the lead again until Melanie Aguila (Orlando, Fla./Palm Beach Atlantic U.) hit a 3-pointer with 12:07 left to make the score 16-14. Almost a minute later, the Lakers countered with baskets by Ragin and Pritchett to take the lead for good, 18-16.
Flagler would work the deficit down to one a couple of times late in the opening half, but that’s as close as they would come as Clayton State took a 32-27 lead into the half.
The Lakes came out and made their first eight shots, five coming from Wiles, and held the Saints scoreless for 4:41 to make the score 48-27. Flagler committed 10 turnovers in the run and did not get a shot off until 3:14 into the half.
The Clayton State defense held Flagler to 4-of-21 (19.0%) shooting from the field, forced 22 turnovers which led to 25 points. The Lakers also exerted their size inside scoring 32 points in the paint.
Tuzzolo led the Saints with 11 points while Jamie Allenbaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Virginia Wesleyan) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Karlyn Reddish (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) came off the bench to add seven points.
Flagler committed 41 turnovers which led to 43 Clayton State points.
Flagler College will take on the host school, Saint Leo University, tomorrow (Nov. 18) night at 7:30 p.m.
