ROCK HILL, S.C. − Stephen Nsereko’s goal in the 13th minute helped lead Winthrop University to a 2-0 win over Flagler College in a non-conference men’s soccer match Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field. Winthrop is a member of NCAA Division I and have already won the Big South Conference regular season title. Flagler is now 2-1 against Division I competition this season.

Nsereko received a pass from Saidi Isaac and blasted a shot from 25 yards out to give Winthrop (12-3-3) and early 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Will Nova had his shot hit the post and a shot by Isaac hit the crossbar.

Flagler’s (9-8-0) opportunities in the first half were few, but the Saints were able to keep the goal differential to just one going into halftime.

Steven Carothers (Apopka, Fla./Bishop Moore HS) had a shot sail high just 55 seconds into the second half. Flagler keeper Jordan Holtz (Clermont, Fla./South Lake HS) was peppered in the second half, including a moment in the 74th minute when Winthrop’s Dustin Bybee put a shot on goal which Holtz deflected out only Isaac try to put back the rebound and hit the post.

The Eagles put home an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Issac scored his 16th goal of the season as he volleyed in Sean Wernon’s flick.

Andy Reid saved three shots for Winthrop. Holtz recorded nine saves for Flagler, seven of which came in the second half alone. 

Six different Saints had shots in the match.

Winthrop out-shot Flagler 21-6 and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Flagler continues on the road with a trip to Savannah to take on SCAD on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. The Saints close out the season Nov. 4 against North Florida at Saints Field at 7 p.m.
