ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Preston Picard (Detroit, Mich./Madonna University) hit a line drive back through the middle which plated Zach Rossetti (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter HS) with the game winning run in the 10th inning as Flagler College edged Lake-Sumter Community College of Leesburg, Fla., Wednesday night in a baseball exhibition game at Flagler Stadium.
Rossetti opened the inning with a similar line drive single that narrowly missed LSCC reliever Jason Durst and skidded into center field. Rossetti then stole second and moved to third base when Reno DiCarlantonio (Wellington, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) placed a perfect bunt between the pitcher’s mound and third base, allowing Rossetti to move to third and DiCarlantonio beat the bunt out without drawing a throw. Picard hit the first pitch he saw up the middle for the win.
Picard led Flagler with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. He had an RBI single in the second inning and also drove in a run in the eighth. Rossetti had a pair of singles in his only two plate appearance, coming off the bench, and scored both times.
Paul Mathews (Baton Rouge, La./Saint Louis CC-Meramec) pitched a near flawless 10th inning, surrendering a base hit and he hit a batter, to earn the win.
Lake-Sumter CC, which led 5-2 through four innings and 7-4 through six innings, could not score in the final four frames. Justin Bass and Kenny Ray each collected three hits on the evening. Bass had a double and a pair of singles and one RBI. Ray tallied three singles, scored a run and drove in another. Durst took the loss on the hill for the Lakes, going one inning, allowing three hits and an earned run.
Flagler College opens the season on Jan. 29 with a noon doubleheader against Shorter College of Rome, Ga., at Flagler Stadium.
