Lady Saints open season with tough 3-2 win

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) racked up a match-high 19 kills and a gaudy .429 hitting percentage to lead Flagler College to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Berry College in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Friday night at Ford Gym.

Layfield also tallied 13 digs to pace the defense along with Lizzie Gomez’ (Cooper City, Fla./Cooper City HS) 13 digs. Carrie Arnette (Keystone Heights, Fla./St. Johns River CC) registered 24 assists and Katie Pommier (Crescent City, Ill./Crescent Iroquois HS) added 21 assists for Flagler (1-0).

Amanda Stiefel led Berry (0-1) with 17 kills and Jamie Boze added 14. Ashley Weider tallied 31 assists while Molly Cline led the defense with 15 digs.

Flagler takes on Covenant College of Lookout Mountain, Ga., tomorrow at noon.
