Flagler softball opens season with a pair of wins

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader against Lynn University 4-1 and 8-0, in five innings, in the season opening doubleheader for both teams Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Flagler has won three of the four season opening doubleheaders since starting the program in 2009.

The Saints used a steady offensive performance with a combined 17 hits and 12 runs scored. The pitching was impressive as three hurlers combine to go 12 innings and scatter eight hits and did not allow an earned run.

In the opener, Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings, scattered four hits and fanned five. She only allowed three base runners to reach second base and retired the last five batters she faced. Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood HS) tossed the last two innings and allowed just two hits and an unearned run.

Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) hit a single in drove in two runs to lead Flagler. Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) singled, scored a run and drove in another while Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) singled and knocked in a run.

Delaney Brey and Kaci Vassallo each singled twice forte Fighting Knights. Callie Darlin (0-1) went the distance and surrendered six hits and four runs.

In the second game, Donna Munafo (Satellite Beach, Fla., Brevard CC) (1-0) dominated early and managed to get out of a couple jams late in mercy-rule game shortened to five innings. She retired 11 of the first 13 batters she faced and carried a no-hitter into the top of the fourth. Munafo scattered two hits and struck out six batters.

Flagler batted around in the second inning and grabbed a 5-0 lead. Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) hit a two-run double down the left field line and Personius added a two-run single later in the frame.

Bessent ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when she singled home Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs HS) with the eighth run.

Flagler's 3-4-5 hitters went a collective 6-for-9 with three runs scored and six RBI. Bessent went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in while Personius was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Collings singled twice and drove in a run.

Kasey Murray (0-1) started and lasted two innings. She allowed five hits and four earned runs. Carisa Cook and Brey each singled for the Fighting Knights.

Flagler hosts Florida Tech in a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow (Feb. 5) at noon.
