ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 13 (Campbell's/ITA Division II Preseason Top 25) Flagler College women's tennis program and 33rd-year head coach Walter Shinn announced the 2012 schedule today. Flagler will play 18 matches, eight of which will be played at the Flagler Tennis Center.
The Saints will embark on another ambitious schedule as they will face six nationally ranked teams in the preseason top 25 poll and two final four participants from last year's national championships.
Flagler opens the season on Feb. 4 at No. 18 Florida Tech. The Saints will follow that with an exhibition match against Florida State College-Jacksonville on Feb. 8 at the Flagler Tennis Center.
On Feb. 11, Flagler will head south to take on NCCAA runners-up, Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Saints will host Atlantic-Sun Conference member Stetson University on Feb. 13.
Three road matches will be next on the docket for Flagler. The Saints will travel to No. 9 Rollins College on Feb. 22 and then open Peach Belt Conference play at No. 16 Georgia College on Feb. 25 and then at Augusta State University on Feb. 26.
Flagler returns home to open March and it will start off with a pair of league matches – North Georgia College & State University on Mar. 3 and No. 7 Clayton State University on Mar. 4. Clayton State advanced to the final four last year.
After a road trip to Georgia Southwestern State University (Mar. 9), Flagler will host No. 12 Columbus State University on Mar. 11 and face the Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Mar. 12. IUP advanced to the Round of 16 last year.
Road trips to USC Aiken (Mar. 24) and Lander University (Mar. 25) precede a home match against UNC Pembroke (Mar. 31).
Flagler opens April with a pair of home matches, it last two of the regular season. On Apr. 1, Francis Marion University pays a visit and the home finale is against No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State University on Apr. 7.
Flagler ends the regular season on the road at Webber International University (Apr. 11) and at the University of Montevallo (Apr. 15).
The Peach Belt Conference Tournament moves to Greenwood, S.C. and the campus of Lander University on Apr. 20-22. The regional tournaments will be held May 6-8 at sites to be determined. The national championships will be held May 16-19 at Louisville, Ky.
Flagler posted a 12-7 overall record last year and went 9-3 in conference play, good for a tie for third place.
