DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Jaymee Carnes scored 16 of her game-high 29 points in the second half to help lead North Georgia College & State University to a 74-55 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
North Georgia snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its seventh consecutive game and fell to 2-17 overall and 1-11 in conference play.
Leading 33-28 at the half, North Georgia used a 17-5 spurt in the first 5:29 of the second half to pull away from Flagler. North Georgia was able to score seven of those points off nine free throw attempts. For the game, North Georgia made 76.9% (20-26) of its shots from the charity stripe, including 13-of-17 in the second half.
The game was closely contested in the first half with North Georgia leading by as many as eight points.
North Georgia out-rebounded Flagler 50-33 and grabbed 18 offensive boards which led to 17 second chance points. Flagler tied its season-low with only five offensive rebounds.
Carnes, the nation's leading scorer averaging 25.5 points per game, made 10-of-26 shots from the field and was 7-for-9 from the free throw line. She completed the double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds. Giovanni Sims also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Stephanie Huffman nearly had a triple-double as she finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Taye'Lor Trotter (St. Petersburg, Fla., Lakewood HS) led Flagler with 16 points as she made three 3-pointers.
Charlsea Owen (St. Augustine, Fla., Pedro Menendez HS) tallied 11 points.
Rachel Brown (Clearwater, Fla., Clearwater HS) recorded season-highs with seven points and eight rebounds. She added three blocked shots.
Jen Knurek (Orlando, Fla., Lake Mary HS) came off the bench to score seven points, grab seven rebounds and dish out four assists.
Flagler will return to action on Feb. 4 at Augusta State University at 1:30 p.m.
