ST. AUGUSTINE – Teondre Williams scored a game 27 points, 22 in the first half alone, to lead Clayton State University to a 78-59 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Thursday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Clayton State improved to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in the Peach Belt Conference. Flagler dropped to 6-11 overall and 0-10 in league play.
Williams made 10-16 of his shots from the field and added three blocked shots and three steals. Tony Dukes came off the bench to tally 13 points while Anthony Salter contributed 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Lakers shot 60% (18-30) from the field in the first half and made 50% (5-10) of their 3-pointers. They finished the game shooting 50% (31-62) from the field. Clayton State forced 18 Flagler turnovers and cashed them in for 24 points.
Matt Clark (St. Augustine, Fla., St. Augustine HS) paced the Saints with 17 points.
Ante Gospic (Zadar, Croatia, Polk State College) added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds while
Chad July (Fort White, Fla., Bridgton (Maine) Academy) came off the bench to score 10 points and grab five rebounds.
Flagler shot 31.3% (10-32) from the field in the first half and was held to 36.8% (24-70) for the game. The Saints out-rebounded the Lakers 44-37 and had 23 offensive boards which led to 21 second chance points.
The Lakers opened the game on an 11-2 run, with nine of those points coming from Williams. The Saints rallied back and cut the deficit to four (13-9) on a dunk by
Desmond Gibson (Havana, Fla., James S. Rickards HS). That would be as close as Flagler would get on the night.
Tyrone Black sank a 12-foot jumper with 8:54 remaining in the first half to spark a 14-2 Clayton State run. Dukes scored 10 points in the run, including capping the streak with a fast break layup to give the Lakers a 38-17 lead.
Flagler will host the University of Montevallo on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
NOTE: Prior to the game, Flagler honored its best player in the history of the program, John Randolph, who played for the Saints from 2000-04. He was a two-time NAIA All-America and holds several career records including 2,073 points scored.
